This project entitled “Flying Eagles Praise Glory” creates new value of the army, and to help residents in better understand their community overall by developing a sense of collective experience through public artworks and the public events related to Hakka Culture. Shalom Arts team installed two artworks in the 601st brigade; one is located in the entrance of the 601st brigade, another is on the wall of Ciguang 14th Village. One is a permanent sculpture with two wings entitled Soaring Wings, which is installed at the entrance of the 601st brigade. Another is mosaic ceramic tiles mural entitled Happiness and Prosperity by the artist Lee Yi-Hsun.
The artwork entitled Soaring Wings is inspired by the“air vortex“central to helicopter flight. The artwork’s symmetry and many-layered aesthetic enables viewers to gaze upon the glorious moment of lift off. Each time these brothers in arms leave on a mission and return safely, like the soaring wings that decorate the aviation badge worn by the corps, this work salutes them and honors their grand mission to defend the nation.
Lee, Yi-Hsun’s artwork Happiness and Prosperity combines images of the AH-64E Guardian, UH-1H Huey, OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, CH-47SD Chinook and UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters. It represents the honorable moment of mission success and shows the strength of the ROC military. This works also integrates the significant Taiwanese Hakka cultural symbols of bright colorful fabrics and tong oil tree flowers. These images and symbols are combined and transformed into something new to express the idea of a happy and glorious life of soldiers and civilians together.
