Brief Description

Hsinchu County Stadium Public Art Installation Project which is located in Zhubei District launches the open competition for this project. Shalom Arts team invites the Israeli cut-out-steel sculptor David Gerstein to create three colorful sculptures, depicting athletes at the first gate of vehicles exiting, the plaza by the entrance of the swimming pool, and the greensward by the entrance. Both of them demonstrate the integrated performance of athletes after many years of training during the competition. This project is also awarded the fifth Best Creativity Award by the Ministry of Culture.

Artwork Name/Artist/Medium/Genre

Artwork1: Peloton Wave/ David Gerstein/ 304 Stainless Steel/ Sculpture
The peloton is a technique employed by cyclists to shield against the wind and cycle faster. The concept is based on the way flocks of birds travel long distances and offers each member of the group protection. The wave shape gives the sense of traversing a wild landscape, allowing the imagination to breathe life into unseen hills. Most importantly, it is about the power of teamwork and it is exactly the solidarity which is emphasized in sports competitions!

Artwork 2: Photo Finish/ David Gerstein/ 304 Stainless Steel/ Sculpture
This artwork captures the heroic image of the runners sprinting towards the finish line. The artist portrays the tiring struggle top-notch runners must go through in order to keep pushing their bodies forward, striving for the final victory. While running, the athletes focus on their whole body until the final triumph; with long strides, head tilted forward, facing up at the sky, rushing forward with the end in sight, leaving onlookers’ hearts moved.

Artwork 3: Champion / David Gerstein/ 304 Stainless Steel/ Sculpture
This piece offers a more detailed impression of the peloton, although watching the cyclists in motion one cannot clearly distinguish individuals. The artist strives to capture movement without sacrificing detail, highlighting motion with colorful stripes that transcend the bodies of the cyclists.
